Alright, Disney fans. The mouse has been hard at work building a ton of new things to us do and see. As an Orlando area local, nothing gets me more excited than the idea of getting to experience something new during my next visit to the south side of Orlando. Below is the ultimate guide to everything new coming to Walt Disney World in 2020 and beyond.
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventures – Epcot: France Pavilion
This 4-D attraction featuring Remy from Pixar’s Ratatouille will allow riders to “shrink” down to the size of a rat as they run for safety across Gusteau’s legendary Parisian restaurant. It’s a spectacular, movie-inspired chase across Chef Skinners’ kitchen as you take in all of the sights, sounds, and smells from the film. The ride itself is an indoor trackless system that has you in the dark. Naturally, it’ll be located in the France Pavillion at Epcot and is scheduled to open 2021 on the 50th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway – Hollywood Studios: Hollywood Boulevard
Take a step through the movie screen and join Mickey and Minnie in the wild and crazy world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon short, only this time, you’re the star. Believe it or not, this is the first Mickey-themed ride ever in the history of the Walt Disney World Resort. As you’d probably expect, this is going to be one wacky ride featuring twists and turns and surprising visual effects. Apparently, the Imagineers behind the ride have invented a new technology for it called, 2 1/2 D (no glasses required) in which they’ve turned the flat look of the short cartoons into a “dimensional display of amazingness”. Opening spring 2020 at Hollywood Studios in the old Great Movie Ride building.
TRON Lightcycle Power Run – Magic Kingdom: Tomorrowland
Enter a high-tech universe in this coaster-style attraction that will feature a train of colorful, neon TRON Lightcycles just like the movies. This ride is so great that it’s currently the highest-rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland. Look for it in the previously unused space next to Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom: Tomorrowland. Opens sometime in 2021.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Epcot: Future World East
Get ready to join Starlord and crew for a unique, family-friendly, ride that’ll be one of the longest enclosed roller-coasters in the world. With an original storyline and a new innovative ride system, guests are sure to be amazed. This will end up replacing the now-closed Universe of Energy in Epcot: Future World East. Look for this Disney World attraction to open in 2021 before the 50th-anniversary celebration.
Reflections Disney Resort
This new nature-oriented, deluxe Disney resort will be located between Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground & Disney’s Wilderness Lodge along the beautiful edge of Bay Lake. With a mix of 900 hotel rooms and Disney Vacation Club villas will celebrate love and respect for nature. Additionally, it will also feature a themed restaurant called Tiana’s Place that’s based on the Princess and the Frog. Look for Reflections to open in 2022.
Wonders of Life Play Pavilion – Epcot: Future World East
Disney has finally made plans to turn the old Wonders of Life building in an actual true-blue attraction for the first time since 2007. The new Play Pavilion with feature all-new, unique experiences designed to encourage playfulness and fun. It will fashion itself as a city of interaction chockful of hands-on games and activities that will allow guests to play with Disney characters. Wonders of Life will be an experience like nothing ever seen at Epcot. This Disney World attraction is slated to open in 2021.
Epcot Main Entrance Transformation
Say good-bye to the “Leave a Legacy” monument… well, not quite as they will be moved just outside of the entrance gate. But, in their place will a brand new entrance featuring a new version of the classic Epcot fountain, and new pathways with manicured green spaces. The new design will be inspired by the original park entrance that so many have professed a nostalgic preference for, I included. Look for this Disney World attraction it to be unveiled in 2021.
This new nightly show will be replacing the long-standing, Illuminations for a limited-time until they unveil the long-term replacement debuting in 2020. As Disney describes it, it will be about the story of Epcot and the single “spark of imagination” that brought it to life. As per the usual Disney nightly show trappings, you can expect lots of fireworks, lasers and dynamic music ranging from bombastic to moody. There is one exception for this, however… Kites. Not just regular kites mind you, choreographed kites. Sounds like a good time.
